Williams Acres Pasadena is a retirement community in Pasadena that William and Shirley Williams founded in 1970. The couple had always wanted to live in California. Still, they couldn’t afford it when they were younger, so they put their savings into this retirement community for themselves and others who would follow them there. The result has been over 40 years of happy living at Williams Acres Pasadena. Residents enjoy all sorts of activities from pool parties to concerts with bands like the Rolling Stones or Kenny Loggins, plus trips to China or Europe on occasion.
There are also lots of volunteer opportunities within the community itself. Williams Acres Pasadena’s founders never intended it just for retirees either; children under 18 months can stay with parents as long as they like as well.

The first photo shows the original layout of the community and its roads and parking lots, complete with a nursery. This particular photo was taken around 1972. The second photo is a little more than five years later. You can see that there are more buildings for the residents, including an ice cream parlor on the ground floor of one of them. There are also several new parking lots in this photo. At the turn of the century (well, actually in 1927), the Southwestern Portland Cement Company opened a cement plant near Sandy, Oregon. The place was huge with amenities for its employees, including over 100 houses for workers and their families.
The company started to decline in the 60s, right around when most of the local timber industry had died out. This would have spelled disaster for a place like Sandy, but a company purchased the cement plant from Texas. Unfortunately, that didn’t do much good as global competition increased, and they were forced to shut down in 1990.
